“I will make you Fishers of Men”
Anchor Verse for this Study
Matthew 28:18-20
The command is to “GO MAKE DISCIPLES_”.(V-19)
Webster Dictionary
Disciple – Noun
1. One who accepts and assists in spreading the doctrines of another
a. One of the twelve in the inner circle of Christ followers according to the gospel accounts.
b. A convinced adherent of a school or individual.
A disciple is a committed lifelong follower of Christ
PLAY: DISCIPLESHIP LINEBACKER VIDEO
EXAMPLE: ASK MATT TO PLAY PIANO, RODNEY TO PLAY GUITAR, THEY CAN’T. YOU CAN’T TEACH SOMETHING YOU DON’T KNOW HOW DO YOURSELF
The CALL______ of a disciple.
Matthew 4:18-22 (Jesus calls the 1st disciples)
• Key statement = “I will make you fishers of men” (V-19)
• There is cost to following Christ. They left their nets, their boats and their family and followed Him. (V-20 & 22)
A disciple is CHOSEN________ by God.
• John 15:16-20 (He chose us)
The QUALIFICATION_________ of a disciple.
(Jesus’ 12 disciples were Galilean Rednecks)
Matthew 16:15 “But what about you?” He asked. “Who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God”
The COST_______ of being a disciple.
Luke 14:25-33 (The cost of being a disciple)
• Jesus wants us to consider the cost of following Him.
Matthew 19:16-24 (To the rich man the cost was to great)
For me it is impossible, but for HIM____ all things are possible.
Matthew 19:25-26
Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God.”
John 15:4-8
We must abide Him and He in us.
We must be disciples before we can make disciples.
John 15:9-17 (Make Disciples)
Be like Christ and tell them what you know.
The impossibility of being a disciple is made possible only through God’s grace.
Jesus said “I will make you fishers of men”. It was not immediately at their calling that they became fishers of men. He spent three years with them, teaching them everything He could. They denied Him at the time of His crucifixion. It was not until they received the Holy Spirit that they became fishers of men.
There is a cost for being a Disciple.
If there is a cost for being a disciple, what is the cost for not being a disciple?
Being casual about Church, God, the Bible, etc, teaches our children and those around us that it is not important. What will that cost you.
Is it too great a cost?
